CHAPTER 10

Bessie didn’t have much time, but she wanted to use what she had wisely. After a moment’s thought, she sat down with her case file and began to read back through the various interviews, taking notes as she went. When someone knocked on her door just before six, she had a short list of questions that she wanted answered.

“Hello,” Doona said when Bessie opened the door. “John was right behind me all the way here, until I turned down the hill. He got stuck waiting for a queue of traffic that was going the other way, but he should be here soon.”

Bessie pulled her friend into a hug and then stepped aside so that Doona could enter the cottage.

“He has all of the food, too,” Doona continued. “I’m starving, and I didn’t trust myself to have anything in my car.”

Bessie laughed. “From where did you get dinner?”

“The restaurant across from the station. It’s an Indian restaurant now, and most of the constables have said good things about the food.”

“Only most of them?”

“One constable in particular complained, but he complains about everything, so I didn’t pay much attention.”

“Ah, there’s John,” Bessie said from the doorway. She watched the familiar car as it pulled into the parking area outside her cottage. John climbed out and then opened his boot and removed a large box.

“Dinner for six,” he said, handing the box to Bessie.

“Six?”

“Well, three and Hugh,” John corrected himself.

Bessie and Doona both laughed, even though there was some truth to John’s words.

“I just need to go back for the pudding,” John told Bessie, before he turned and walked back to his car. This time he got a bakery box out of the boot.

“Should I ask, or wait and be surprised?” Bessie asked him when he returned to her door.

“You’ll laugh,” Doona told her. “I was in Ramsey today, and I’d promised John I’d get something for pudding. I stopped in the bakery, and they offered me what’s in the box for five pounds.”

“Now I’m almost afraid to look,” Bessie told her.

John put the box on the counter. Bessie opened it slowly.

“’Happy Birthday, Arnold,’” she read from the cake.

Doona nodded. “Apparently, Arnold’s mother rang to cancel the order this morning because Arnold has managed to catch chicken pox. They’re going to get another cake for him when he’s better, but right now he isn’t eating much of anything. Anyway, the bakery had already made and decorated the cake, so they offered it to me for the cost of the ingredients.”

“I’m not sure I understand why there are roads running across it,” Bessie said.

“There were plastic diggers and cars on the roads, but the bakery can reuse those. They would have included them if I’d wanted them, but I don’t have any use for them, and Aalish is still several years too young for small cars with tiny wheels,” Doona explained.

Bessie nodded. “I’m sure it will taste delicious,” she said firmly, mostly trying to convince herself.

Doona laughed. “I’ve never had anything from that bakery that wasn’t delicious.
